Get Motivated by Tamara Lowe is subtitled, "Overcome Any Obstacle, Achieve Any Goal, and Accelerate Your Success with Motivational DNA." This title says a lot but the content of the book backs up the claims held in it. The foreword is written by Rudy Giuliani who emphasizes his belief in Tamara Lowe's ability to help people tap into proper motivation.
Tamara studied motivated people for eight years and that is the basis for this book. The book is packed with visual aides and worksheet type pages to aid the process of discovery. Along with the book you will find information to access the Get Motivated website where you will find a variety of tools to help you along the way.
Tamara tells us that we are all born with a unique motivational DNA, just like we have our own blood type or eye color. Individual motivation becomes easier once we understand our own motivational DNA and that of those we are in relationships with.
Tamara discusses and uses four laws of motivation throughout her book. The first rule is that everyone is motivated differently. Meaning motivation is not just a set of steps every person can follow. The steps will be different for each person.
The second rule is that each individual has a unique and distinct motivational type. This is the bases for her discussion on motivational DNA.
The third rule tells the reader that motivates one person can de-motivate another. Once you understand your unique set of motivators that does not mean you will be able to motivate others.
The forth rule instructs the reader that no one motivational type is "better" than any other. She used an example of her brother who is motivated by money, yet he is very giving. His motivation is just external, but it is not based on greed.
Tamara has the reader first go through a test and find out what his or her own motivational type is and then moves the reader on to looking at other people.
Tamara also discusses how learning about individual motivational make up can help greatly in parenting as children are often motivated differently than ourselves and their peers. Each child will have his or her unique motivational DNA and recognizing it will help greatly in parenting each child.
The concepts discussed and taught in this book can be life changing for individuals trying to motivated themselves, as well as for parents, teachers, and leadership of any kind. I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to figure out how to motivate herself or trying to motivate others.
