Testimonies: Choosing work over being a stay-at-home mom

by Joanna Wood

I am a working mother. I have the best of both worlds... a fulfilling career and a sweet little boy to welcome me home with hugs and kisses at the end of a long work day.

The decision to become a working mother was not easy. My husband and I were both on active duty in the military when I got pregnant, and neither of us wanted to leave the Navy.

We agreed that one of us needed to be home full-time for our son's first year, but initially could not agree on which of us would take on the challenge. My salary was higher, which simplified our final decision. I would continue to work outside the home while my husband took on the responsibilities of a stay at home dad.

I went back to work after 2 months of maternity leave. The first weeks were hard. I cried in the bathroom on a daily basis and even told my boss I wasn't sure I wanted to extend my contract. She was able to provide support and perspective on my new jobs as both mom and breadwinner that helped me tough it out.

After the initial adjustment phase, I was glad I made the decision to remain in the military. I bought a breast pump, got intimately acquainted with the nursing mothers' room and carried photos of my son with me everywhere in case the opportunity to brag should arise.

My role as a mother spilled over into my work life, teaching me patience and empathy when dealing with others. These newly developed qualities have made me a more effective leader. Meanwhile, working in a demanding field while juggling family obligations taught me to prioritize and manage my time more efficiently. I have become a more well-rounded person thanks to my experiences as a working mom.

Some days are harder than others. I've experienced my fair share of mommy guilt when I realize I can't make it to every play date or be home for every first, but daddy is always there, and my son knows his mommy loves him. At the end of the day, I know I'm doing what is best for my family.

I have nothing but respect for women who choose to stay home with their children, but I can't imagine turning back now. The ability to make a difference on multiple levels keeps me motivated, and I am doing everything I can to provide a good life for my son.

I'm proud to be a working mother.
