Being a parent is the most important job in the world. It is full-time and never ending. Different aspects are involved to be the best parent you can be to your child, depending on the changes that happen during the stages of life, but there are some constants no matter the age of a child.
Unconditional love is the most important thing a parent can offer a child. Parents do not always have to agree with choices their children make, but should still love them and be there whenever possible. It is ok to try to lead children onto a certain path in life, but if they take a different direction, parents should see what that road has to offer. No one is too old to learn about a different lifestyle, religion, or career path, even parents. Parents should keep an open mind and let love guide them when dealing with things children do that are out of their comfort zone.
Listen to children and really pay attention to what they have to say. A parent builds a child's self-esteem when they act interested in what the child has to say and offer positive feedback. Children will see their views are important and feel freer in offering opinions in the future.
Teach good sportsmanship to children. Today, there seems to be a trend in which every child who participates in an activity gets an award, which isn't always a good thing. Children need to learn that everyone has their own separate abilities, and that sometimes, one person is better at a particular activity than another. Parents should teach their children that losing a game or not placing first in a science fair is not the end of the world. The emphasis should be on doing the best job possible and not on winning all the time. Children need to learn to congratulate others when they win, and about holding their head high when they lose.
Talk with a child about important matters. Parents need to discuss sex, manners, racism, and any other social issues with children, and explain the right and wrong about each. Parents who do not discuss important issues with children leave them hanging. The child is then left to muddle through life not knowing what is right or healthy.
Be there for children. Parents should always be available when children need to talk. They should offer advice, but be willing to just listen if that's what the child needs. A strong shoulder to lean on is sometimes all that is required.
Praise children for a job well done, and offer encouragement when things do not go a child's way. Children will learn to keep trying if parents reinforce abilities and encourage growth. Children who know they can do better will try new things and make their way in the world easier than children who quit trying if they fail. Parents should never do everything for their child, but instead, help the child do things on their own. We want to raise independent children who head into the world and make the most of it.
To be the best parent you can be to your child a parent needs to be understanding, love without ceasing, listen and advise, laugh often with the child, and be a true friend. Parents should not judge, push children to do things they have no interest in, or interfere in the lives of older children to the extent of causing problems, and should not hinder independence. Follow your heart, listen to your instincts, and trust yourself to be the best parent you can be to your child.
