ONLY MARRIED
Next door dogs
bark for sake of carping,
in fits and starts,
yips and yaps,
going nowhere
in a hurry
saying nothing,
conveying worry,
spouses who leaped short of love
and landed only married:
a house, a yard, a pedigree,
an iron fence with filigree,
a boy, a girl,
a social whirl,
expensive wine
but no bouquet.
No wonder they bark
the whole long day.
