How to spot treat stains

Created on: August 11, 2009

Stains are not the problem that they use to be, in fact, there are not many stains that can't be removed from clothing these days. There are so many pre spotters on the market that stains have almost become just another part of doing laundry but so much easier. Perhaps the hardest thing about today's stain is finding them before they dry in to badly or hit the wash and the dry cycle. Stains still have to be pre-spotted to get rid of them so here is a few ways to spot treat stains.

Pre-spot options

Your work on stains begins when you're sorting your laundry. This is when you check your clothing for stains. The fresher the stain is the easier it is to remove, kids really don't worry a lot about stains so some may not be fresh when you find them. Depending on the type of stain you will now choose your pre spotter and there are many. Tide has a pre-spot pen, Shout has a pre-spot wipe and that is only for starters, you can find other commercial sprays or make your own. Your choices are unlimited.

Read the labels

Always check the label on the clothing for manufacturer's instructions first, also check the directions on any pre-spotter you use. Some of them contain bleach and may not be compatible to the type of clothing you're removing the stain from. Never let a piece of clothing go through the dryer without the stain pre-spotted the heat of a dryer will set the stain in more and you may find it very difficult to get it out. If you're unsure of the material you're working on use a patch test to see how the material reacts to your pre-spotter before addressing the full stain. Choose an inconspicuous part of the clothing to test.

Oily stain removal

When finding a stain you have to determine what type of stain it is. If you're dealing with an oily spot it is not difficult to remove and you don't need any of the market pre-spotters to do it. All you need is a bit of liquid dish detergent placed right on the stain and dab from the outside of the stain working towards the middle. The liquid detergent will break down the oil and lift it from your clothing. Hold your piece of clothing under the facet and let the cold water run onto the stain from the back of the clothing. By running the water on the back of the material you are not giving the stain a chance to permeate into the fibers deeper than what they are. The water should wash away your stain easily and you can wash your item as usual.
