Lifestyle changes that will impact your longevity

Many of the factors that impact longevity of life are related to scientific research and pharmaceutical breakthroughs that are touted as miracle drugs. But isn't the real goal not to just live longer, but to experience longevity and still be able to enjoy it? What this means is that you don't want to just live a long time because of prescription drugs that can lengthen your life. You want to incorporate the kinds of lifestyle changes into your daily routines that will help you reap the benefits of longevity.

So what choices can you make now, that will help you reach those golden years and still be in good health?

1. Exercise is perhaps the most important singular choice that you can make that will impact your body, mind, and emotions. When you do a cardio-workout, natural endorphins are released into your blood that can positively impact your overall mood and your sense of well-being. Exercise also helps prevent the buildup of plaque in your arteries that can lead to stroke and vascular disease. Exercise doesn't just increase your physically fitness. It also helps your body's cells rejuvenate while staying younger, longer.

2. Eat a balanced diet of protein, whole grains, and fresh vegetables. Good nutrition will help keep you physically strong while boosting your immune system. Studies show that foods that are rich in phyto-nutrients and antioxidants help the body to repair damages done by aging and increase the potential for longer life.

3. Be a regular volunteer in the community. Seniors who engage in volunteer activities or belong to clubs that are service oriented tend to be more proactive about preventative measures that will safeguard their own physical and mental health. If you regularly volunteer, chances are you will be more aware of the importance of keeping appointments for well-checks, getting annual flu and pneumonia vaccinations, and making sure that you don't expose yourself to illnesses that might jeopardize your health.

4. Don't smoke and limit alcoholic beverages to an occasional glass of red wine. Smoking decreases blood flow and can lead to stroke. The carcinogens contained in tobacco products are known to cause cancer. Excessive consumption of alcohol is a leading cause of accidental death. Alcohol abuse can lead to cognitive impairment and organ failure. While an occasional glass of red wine has been linked to better heart health and lower cholesterol, if you don't already drink alcoholic
