Poetry: A man I know

by Barbara Combs Williams

Created on: August 10, 2009

His face is weathered, full of life, he's seen many a long hard year
I see that time has bent his back, but still has not drawn a tear
This man I know, who stands apart, but loves to draw you in
He tells a tale of days gone by and some that's never been

I talked with him from time to time, just to get his views
He can build a church from steeple down and kneel upon its pews
He tells me how the real world works, to keep love within my sight
That man alone can not survive but languishes through the night

This man I know, who smiles so bright upon a baby's joyful face
He strives for peace, for love, for good, firmly rooted in God's grace
This man I know, who sows, who reaps, who firmly stands his ground
I know he means to the world to me, truly a father I have found

I know you have your favorites, dads throughout the world abound
But this man I know who once was lost, yet now, is surely found
Told me that to love one another is simply God's greatest command
He now walks hand in hand with Jesus in his treasured promised land
