Shopping for clothes at Goodwill can be hit or miss but if you have some spare time and a creative eye you can come away a winner.
Before you go looking at your nearby Goodwill store, take inventory to see what you need to add to your closet. Sometimes you are tempted to get something just because it's cheap but really take a look and think before throwing it in the cart.
If you find something of interest examine it closely for any stains or defects. If you need to try it on. Is this something you will wear and keep for awhile or will you donate it back in a month?
Look through all sections of sizes if you are between sizes because often items are relocated incorrectly. You might find a large in a medium rack that is perfect for you. If you are searching for Maternity wear also check some of the larger sizes or plus sizes in case there is something suitable there as well.
When looking at shirts make sure the collars are not stretched out and the color is still vibrant. If you love the item but it is too faded consider getting it and using a package of Rit dye on it to bump up the color a bit.
If you are looking at dresses or pants be sure to take a look at the length and style closely. Sometimes an item is marked a size 10 but it's really an 8 after it shrunk over the years.
With children's clothing look to see that there are no stains and also be sure that your child will be comfortable in it and that it is easy to put on and take off if it's a baby item. If there is something that is a little bit too big and you are ok with a needle and thread consider getting it and taking it in or up. Some people would rather donate it than deal with hemming pants so take a look and see if you can do a little alterations for the item.
Try on any shoes and make sure that they haven't gotten too stretched out or are the wrong size but placed in the wrong area.
Look for clothing items that are classic and will stand the test of time (or at least several months). A black dress, shirts and skirts with simple patterns and even coats are basic items that can be worn again and again.
Have fun spending a little and shopping a lot at Goodwill.
