The perfect world

Past? What Past?

You've heard it before, ad nauseum: the past is behind you, the future doesn't exist yet, today - this moment, even - is all that matters. But what if the past and the future really did cease to exist in our minds? What if we could not remember yesterday and could not plan ahead for tomorrow? What if we really did trust life to supply our needs, moment by moment?

Imagine waking up every day as if you were just plopped down on this big, beautiful earth. You are refreshed and excited about the moment, and the next moment, and the next moment. The phrases "why did" and "what if" are not a part of your vocabulary, because you have no memory of yesterday and no concept of tomorrow. You simply awake and take in your surroundings as if seeing it for the first time.

You are keenly aware of the lightness of your body and soul. All of your senses are at their peak, and you can even taste the sweet air you breathe. You hear the birdsong anew, like tinkling crystal. You appreciate the sparkling dew on the deep green grass. You are in awe of the sunlight's play on the water. You admire the delicate clouds against the brilliant blue sky, like watermarks on paper. The breeze caresses you. Nature gives you its love, and you receive it fully, much like a loyal dog would from a long-absent but much-loved master.

Nothing weighs down your heart nor saps your physical and emotional energy, because as far as you know, yesterday and the day before and the day before that never happened. You only carry in your heart the residual effects of any love, kindness, encouragement, and appreciation you may have received. You have no memory of hurts, disrespect, longing, fear, betrayal, illness, grief, regret, stress and pain. You harbor no anger, no unforgiving mindset, no judgment, and no prejudice. Everything and everyone just is, today.

Imagine it. Seriously. Close your eyes and just for one minute, imagine your life without a past and a plan. Imagine your life as the culmination of good things without a source. All you are is the good. You only sense the good about the people in your life. Negative occurrences in your life disintegrated in the moment they occurred, rendered powerless over your simple joy over being alive, today. In this moment.

Are you feeling it, too?
