Understanding foreclosures

by Gary Maclean

Created on: August 10, 2009   Last Updated: January 21, 2010

There are many people who seem to think they know what the term foreclosure means. They think they understand it and can interpret it. They freely write articles about how to buy foreclosed property, how to find foreclosed property and how to make the most out of the current foreclosure environment. The short-sightedness of these titles tells me they understand no more than how to make money off some other poor sap's misfortune.

If I were to hold a class entitled, "How to Get Rich by Reading Obituaries", would you sign up? If I wrote an article called, "Make Your Mark by Profiling Dying Children", would you scramble to read it? If I could tell you where to find the most naive old people to sell magazines to, would you listen? Yes you would, and you know it! If you would listen to, watch or read any informative broadcast or article on how to profit from somebody losing their home then you won't stop at anything.

What do we think a foreclosure is? Do we really think it is a process of taking someones home that deserves to lose it anyway? Can we justify our selfish actions of trying to scoop up the best foreclosure deal by saying: "Well, the past owners were probably dead beats anyway?" Is every single foreclosure made up of a nice house and a wicked family? If any of these come even remotely close to your fantasies about why someone lost their home, then perhaps you should lose yours, at least once!

I am not so gullible as to believe there are not bad people in our world. I know there are scoundrels, rapscallions and degenerates. However, my life experiences have generally taught me that the type of person defined by any of those terms simply does not regularly get involved in a house mortgage. Perhaps occasionally and maybe a few of the foreclosures we see today are because of those types of people. Primarily, however, I believe that at the base of every foreclosure there is a lost job of some kind.

Someone has lost their long time, $22 and hour, automotive supplier job due to you and people like you, buying foreign automobiles rather than supporting your American manufacturers. Or they have lost a good share of their income because the company they are working for has convinced them they need to cut back. Perhaps they have even been trapped in a six digit environment, because that is what they were making when they purchased their home. Now they are lucky to make a five figure income but suddenly realize they cannot support their
