Chic. Sophisticated. Feminine but strong. Trend-defying. All of these are words to describe the global fashion sensation known as Prada. Started in 1913 by the Prada Brothers in Milan, Italy, Prada was a luxury leather supplier. It wasn't until Mario's granddaughter Miuccia Prada took over the reigns in 1978 that Prada expanded into the world of fashion and became what it is known as today. Miuccia Prada was ranked #40 on zimbio.com's 100 Most Influential People in Fashion. The Wall Street Journal has named her one of the 30 most powerful women in Europe. Often considered a status symbol, Prada has everything that is desirable in the world of fashion-opulent fabric, classic cuts and quality that is unsurpassed.
Miuccia believed in clothing being unrestrictive and granting ease in movement. In the 1980's, Miuccia would launch her ready to wear line. While other designers would experiment with fashions of the 80's like lace, bold color, short skirts and low cut tops, Miuccia stayed true to her vision with classic cuts. Her line consisted of pieces that had classic construction, neutral colors, luxurious fabric and clean lines with astonishing elegance. The fashion world noticed, and Prada would make a significant mark on the industry. Miuccia would also produce the essential black nylon waterproof bag that was a must-have for fashionistas everywhere, which, ironically, with the lack of the bold logo of her counterparts, served as an anti-status symbol. Although the design later incorporated Prada's logo, it was more discreet than other labels, and it certainly didn't slow down the sales of the Prada handbag.
By the 1990's the Prada name had cemented itself as a leader in the fashion industry. With its signature look of a dropped waistline, skinny belt, knee-skimming skirts and sky-high heels, Miuccia's vision was sophisticated, exuded confidence and was sexy without revealing too much. Miuccia and her husband, Patrizio Bertelli, would soon after expand Prada to include a menswear line, a sportswear line and lingerie.
In 1992, Miuccia launched her namesake label, Miu Miu, as a more affordable option to the high-end Prada line. With more flowing lines, bright colors and loud prints than its sister-company, Miu Miu targeted a much younger market. The Miu Miu line is successful, like its Prada counterpart, boasting stand-alone boutiques worldwide. Celebrity fans include the likes of Katie Holmes, Nicole Richie, Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan.
