Steps to becoming a successful person

by Bernadette Jasmin

Created on: August 10, 2009

What is success? Is it something you can hold in your hands, eat, or give away? Of course not, but most people know what it is. It's getting that A on a Math test after laboring through many math problems. It's a child taking a first step. It's the mother holding the newborn in her arms after twelve hours of labor. As you can see success can be measured in many ways.

To most people success is achieving a favorable outcome whether it is leaping out of a parachute to driving for the first time. For the most part success brings with it a feeling of accomplishment and achievement in whatever area it is attained.

Is success limited to a few? No! But do most people feel successful? Not necessarily. Most individuals look up to those who have achieved fame and fortune as being successful, those who are larger than life. Is this success though? Many of these persons crash and burn and fall from grace because fame is a heady thing.

How do you go about achieving success, healthy success that is? Yes, Virginia it is possible to achieve a measure of success in whatever area you work or play in. So, how do you go about it? First, you have to know what it is you want to accomplish. In other words you have to have a goal. What's the point if you don't know where you're heading? Right? Pick an area in your life that you want to make some improvement on. Write it down. Remember if you don't write it down you are not bound it's just a dream.

Second, be specific. If you do not have a focus you will be wandering all over the place with no clear idea of what you are doing. You will accomplish nothing that way. You will only get yourself frustrated and discouraged.

Third, make a plan. Remember, Rome was not built in a day. It just seems that way. When we look at others achievements we are often tempted to be down on ourselves, but they did not accomplish the things they did overnight.

Fourth, start small. You may get overwhelmed if you take on a task that is insurmountable. Many people set out to achieve a purpose, but take on more than they can chew and create a self fulfilling prophecy of failure. As you accomplish small goals you will feel more confident to attack bigger goals step by step.

Fifth, a goal may have many steps and components. For example, if you set out to lose weight you cannot decide that you are going to starve yourself tomorrow. There are many facets to a goal. The person who decides they are going to lose weight may have to do some
