Reflecting on my past friendships, I realize now, what makes a best friend. Recognizing a best friend. may be very subtle. An individuals characteristics comprised of nurturing, encouraging and caring traits will certainly deem a best friend. Years ago,I did not recognize my best friend. I had been in a self imposed exile and depression, while mourning I refused to talk on the telephone and would not even venture outside of my home. I was devastated by the death of my beloved grandfather. My thoughts were selfish , I surmised,. no one knew how I felt and I refused to let anyone share those feelings with me. My best friend, Grace did not give up on me. She continued to call over a period of weeks. .
Finally, one day, I answered the phone that appeared to be ringing off the hook. I didn't even recognize the tone of my own voice. Sharply, I said to her, "Leave me alone. ". On that day her name truly fit her character. She bestowed upon me the grace to ignore my rude comment and tell me she would call me at another time. I was caught off guard by her remark and simply stated, "I can't talk now". She took the time to understand me and forgave me immediately.
We remained friends until her mother moved the family to another state. I had once again recognized her friendship and kindness nearly three decades later. It was my birthday and I admit,I may have been feeling a little sorry for myself. My daughter came home with a gift for me.I tentatively unwrapped and opened the box. Inside the box was a figurine of porcelain, holding a basket of flowers. Immediately, I named the beautiful porcelain piece ."Grace". She was given to me during a time , I had felt despondent. I felt Grace's kindness and compassion embrace me once again.
We have not seen each other, since that period in time. The friendship is still residing in my heart and perhaps one day , I will be blessed to show another friend the same compassion, understanding and kindness, that was once shown to me. Friendships should always offer insight into the person you wish to become. With that in mind, when i grow up, I want to be like Grace.i pray God will grant me the opportunity and I hope I will recognize another good friend. Gaining the trust of a friend is essential in true friendships.
