Online education has become the choice of preference for many working adults who wish to increase their earning potential by furthering their education. The idea of earning your degree from the comfort of your home can be quite appealing, however many find the reality to be much more difficult than anticipated. Despite this, there are some simple steps to ensuring your success, such as consistency, time management, and perseverance.
With most things in this life, consistency really is the key to success, so set a school routine just as though you were going to class. Develop a school ritual, if you will. Create a space within your home that is your designated "classroom" and then, perhaps most importantly, create a study schedule.
Time management should be a priority when endeavoring to pursue online education. When you make your schedule, make sure to set aside specific times at least five days a week to devote to each subject. A college professor once told me that in order to ensure success in any class, one needed to plan on devoting about five hours a week to each subject, including class time. Make sure that this "school" time is a priority in your schedule, just as work and family time presumably are. Whether you feel you need it or not, use the time for school related activities; if you have completed your assignments you can use the time to prepare for future projects. This way, if something unavoidable should interfere with your schedule, you will be ahead of the game, rather than behind the curve.
Last, but certainly not least, be persistent. School can be mentally demanding and draining on just about anyone, whether you're attending real life or online classes, but if you just keep at it you will eventually achieve your goals. Don't get discouraged if you struggle in the beginning. Getting back into an educational mode after being out of the academic world isn't easy. Do not give up after your first semester, even if you do feel frazzled and frustrated. If you work diligently, you will probably do better than you expect. Moreover, don't sweat it if you don't make that A. There's a reason it's impressive to maintain a high grade point average, if it was easy everybody would do it.
Quality online education truly is a great solution for the working adult that wants to achieve their education goals later in life but are not able to quit working in order to attend school. It can also be a great option for the stay at home mother who doesn't want to sacrifice time away from home and family, or the military member wishing to take advantage of their educational benefits. However, it does require commitment and work. So remember, be consistent, mange your time wisely, and persevere.
