Wooden vs. Plastic toys...
Generally, wooden toys are viewed as 'better' but there are a few caveats that you must consider...
1. Check the type of paint that was used to color the toy: Some were made prior to the unleaded paint. There are vintage and antique toys out there that have lead paint which can adversely affect and harm your child.
2. Be aware of imperfections in the wood such as splinters and wear. Ensure also that there has not been some sort of infestation that can spread to your home..such as termites.
3. Cleanse everything before you present it to your child. This is rarely followed when your little darlings have spotted a desired item, but do it anyway. It will ensure that your lil one will have a glorious day of play and not a day in the ER.
4. Wooden toys HURT when they are thrown. Make sure that you instruct and follow up with the proper use of toys and that they are not to be used against anyone...even in anger.
5. Play with your child at least the first few times that he/she plays with the toy or at least monitor his/her play. You can notice how the child interacts with the child. This is especially helpful for children under the age of 3; those who explore everything with their mouth.
