How to save money on rabbit care

Rabbits are relatively inexpensive to care for. Like with some other pets, rabbits don't generally require yearly immunizations, they are not big eaters, and unless they suffer from an ailment, they don't need monthly medications. However, rabbit owners can still cut back on spending on the care and upkeep of their animals.

Prevention

To save on possible future medical bills, prevention is important. Keeping your rabbit safe and sick-free will save money and a trip to the veterinarian. Owners can prevent illness and diseases by providing their rabbits with a safe environment and nutritious diet. Whether you keep your rabbit inside or outside, their environment is full of dangers. Inside rabbits can get into mischief when allowed to roam freely.

Rabbit-proofing your rabbit's territory is important for their safety. Outside rabbits should be provided a safe and secure hutch that is kept clean. The hutch should be safe from predators and kept sanitized to prevent flies.

A healthy diet is important for rabbits. As an owner, you may feel the need to indulge your pet with treats and human foods. Many human foods are unsafe for rabbits to consume. A common misconception is that rabbit's can live on lettuce. While lettuce is not toxic to rabbits, it can cause diarrhea when given in large amounts which can lead to dehydration. Lettuce also has no health benefits and lacks the nutrition that rabbits need. A healthy diet can consist of a high-quality rabbit pellet, unlimited supplies of Timothy hay, and plenty of fresh water.

Food and Treats

Rabbit owners can save money on both food and treats. Only supply your rabbit with the amount of food that they need, not how much they will consume. Obesity is a health problem seen in many pet rabbits especially those that don't get adequate exercise. Your rabbit doesn't need treats especially those purchased at the local pet store. Some of these treats have additives, preservatives, and high amounts of sugar that your rabbit doesn't need. If you want to supply an occasional treat, opt for a piece of fresh carrot, strawberry, or apple. If you want to be creative, you can also find recipes for baking your own healthy rabbit treats that you can make in batches and store in your freezer.

Rabbit pellets can be purchased in bulk however; do not purchase more pellets than will be used within a three month time (I prefer a one-month supply). Pellets can become stale and even moldy which are unsafe to feed your pet. Keep pellets in an air-tight
