Baseball hats become some peoples nearest and dearest friend and after so many uses they also become very dirty. It becomes an emotional attachment that you can't disregard and even a new hat won't take the place of the one you already have. There are memories in the hat you wear and you are not willing to let go of them lightly. This leads to a predicament for the owner. Your baseball cap maybe well worn and is easier to damage so you ponder the situation but there is no fear of losing your favorite hat if you know how to clean baseball hats.

Prevention helps

When you buy that hat that holds your favorite team logo or has some important memories, the first thing you should consider is trying to preserve it before it gets dirty. This can be done by scotch guarding your hat before wearing it. This not only protects your hat from stains for a longer period of time but can also add to the life of your hat. Depending on where you use your hat, try and prevent it from getting stained in the first place.

Labels are important

If you have come to a point where you have to do something to clean your favorite hat start by reading the label on the cap, this should list out all the types of materials that are in the hat and give you a clear idea of what you can and cannot do. Also check for the manufacturer's instructions on how you should wash your hat. This will give you a base to start with once you have some idea on where you should start with the washing.

Hat materials

Baseball hats are usually containing two materials which are cotton or polyester. If yours has these types of materials then both of these should wash very well. Most hats are made to be durable so all is not lost when they become dirty. If you find that your hat contains wool then you have to be very careful washing them as they shrink very easily but you won't find many baseball hats with this material in them.

Spot check for washing

It is always a good practice if you just use a small part of your hat that is hidden out of sight to try with washing before you commit the whole hat to washing. This is simple to do by wetting a cloth with a mild washing detergent and apply it to an inconspicuous part of your hat. Once you have wet the hat watch for color runs or fading. If your hat passes both these tests you can continue in the knowledge that it can be washed. Never use alcohol or hair spray on a badly stained hat it could make the stain much worse or cause the colors to bleed.
