I was wrong.
By going each week I 'm not only able to meet and be with other believers but I also get to learn about discipleship and how smaller groups who meet during the week is something that is encouraged.
I know that some people are of the belief that it's not really necessary to do either thing. I guess for them that's OK. For the longest time I held the same idea then about 6-months ago my wife went to the church that we now attend. The following week she asked me to go, at first I was all, ho-hum, maybe next week I can go with you.
The next week finally came and this time she wouldn't let me talk my way out of it.
I went and it took some time for me to get out of the frame of mind that I put myself in these last 15 years or so, starting with the old stand-by You can talk to God from any where. While it is true that God can hear you from anywhere, there is something to be said for a group of people coming together to worship and give praise to the Lord.
Let us not forget the music, Something that I wasn't aware of when I went for my first time. Now, don't misunderstand me I have heard Christian music before but hearing it in this venue (Our church uses a gym) is great. I'm not much of a singer but the music is modern and the words are inspirational.
I think the message and how it's delivered are 2 important aspects of church. The pastor has to be able to present the Lords message and keep you engrossed at the same time. Not an easy task Sunday after Sunday, sometimes Friday through Sunday.
The sermon is obviously important and the message it conveys can have a profound impact on you. Our pastor always prays for God to use him to pass his message on and he most definitely gets that point across, He uses humor and relevant stories from his past.
He isn't afraid to let us know that he fell short in his life and it's OK to do that. God loves you anyway. Or should I say, in spite of, your perceived shortcomings
.
Do I think that you need to go to church to talk with God? I know what I believe and that's a question you have to answer for yourself.
Will God love you any less? No, he won't. But why would you not go to Gods house and lend your voice to the other voices giving praise to God and Jesus.
I can honestly say that it has changed my life and relationship with Jesus.
It has even made my relationship with my wife better.
