What is Runescape? You may have heard people you know talking about the quest they completed last night, or all the "noobs" that were in there favorite mining spot, or how many people they "Owned" in the wilderness. Hearing these things would bring to mind the question, what are these people talking about? Well they are referring to Runescape, a Java based MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer On-line Role Playing Game). Runescape is a video game played around the world by millions of people of all ages, and has set a Guinness world record for being the worlds most popular free MMORPG.

So, why do so many people play Runescape? Runescape is a highly interactive game, where players have the freedom to do almost anything that they choose. In the game there is no set goals that need to be accomplished for completion, rather the player makes there own goals of what they want to accomplish in the game, whether it is to reach a certain level, or own a certain type of armor, or anything along those lines, and then they set out to accomplish those goals on their own. Perhaps what makes the game so appealing to so many people is that through your character, you can become anyone that you want to be, whether its a powerful mage, a deadly archer, or a fearless warrior, the choice is yours.

Runescape is set apart from most other MMORPGs by the fact that it does not require you to choose a specific class, in other words profession, that you have to stick to throughout the game. What this means is, if you choose to do so, you can train your Melee fighthing skills, along with your Archery skills, and also you Magical abilities, instead of having to pick only one of the three. Runescape is one of the few popular MMORPGs that allow players to do this, which is most likely a leading cause to the game's outstanding success.

Jagex, the company that owns Runescape, gives people wishing to play the game two options. They offer a free version of the game, which in itself is quite extensive and is quite sufficient for most casual players, and they also offer a "Members" version of the game, which requires you to pay a monthly fee. The Members version of the game is quite a bit more extensive then the free version, and offer many more quests to complete, skills to train, and places to explore, or more simply put, it has much more to do.

So, to sum up this short explanation, Runescape is a massive, on-line, role playing game, that is played daily by millions of people from around the world. It is in itself, a world within our own, where people go to leave there lives behind, and live a life of danger, adventure, and exploration.
