The door swings open and you gasp. There, laying on that dreadful carpet, colored what you can only guess should be green, are two beds perched precariously on four legs with nothing but a white plastic cover overtop of them. The walls are a bland shade of white, or if the school wanted to be thoughtful, a pale yellow, not to mention all the holes and scratches all over them and, incredibly, the ceiling. The sad excuse for a window is covered with those metal blinds that provided some sort of privacy at some point, before every other blind was bent, snapped, or broken. The thought crosses your mind, "How am I going to live here?" There is a simple solution: live.
First and foremost, pick your bags up that you dropped in shock, and begin unpacking immediately. Just replacing that plastic bedcover will dramatically increase appeal. If you've got a fridge and/or microwave, that'll take up a relatively good chunk of space in such cramped conditions, which means less area to decorate. The dresser(s) or closet(s) are bare and longing to be full, so definitely throw some clothes in which ever you've got.
The desk is the first area to tackle when decorating the room. The desk is where you'll be spending countless hours, whether you're studying or sleeping. If you've got room once you've got your computer, printer, light, speakers, and have a decent area to do work in, a small picture or two is always kind of nice to have right there. This is taken from the idea of having an office desk and pictures to show off. But be weary, don't put any pictures you don't want to explain on your desk.
The next area will be the bed. All that really needs to be done here is get a semi-decent looking bedspread and go with it. Something comfortable is preferable, though if you're going to be sleeping at your desk, using your books for pillows, you mightn't bother worrying about the comfort level.
The carpet is also an easy fix. Get a rug or two. Those stains, whatever they are, aren't very appealing if you're going to show off your room. If rugs are too expensive (which they are of course), I've found a nice cheap blanket works well. It's just going to get walked on anyway. You can even use it to cover up cords or cable if you need to.
The ceiling. You may be wondering, "Why on Earth would I want to decorate my ceiling?" But I'm not talking about painting it or putting up Paper Mache. You can throw a poster overtop of your bed so when you lay down at night that black light poster
