Dandruff is a type of scalp disorder which may not pose any serious threat to hair growth all the time, but it is very irritating and sometimes embarrassing, too. Dandruff is a state of scalp condition sometimes caused by fungal infection. This state of scalp condition can be termed as unhealthy condition of the scalp which hampers the regular growth of hair. In this condition, one starts to feel itchy on the scalp and flakes start falling over the neck, face, eyebrows and eye lashes.
Cleaning of hair and scalp is absolutely necessary. But, apart from cleanliness, we should take all the precautions to avoid the spreading of infections. So, keep your comb and towel separate and clean them regularly. The comb should be disinfected with an antiseptic solution once in a day. Pillow covers should be washed regularly.
In the parlors, hair-cutting tools like scissors must be disinfected first, before using it. Dandruff is highly infectious, and once you get the infection it is very difficult to get rid of the problem permanently. It lingers with recurring attacks.
Avoid any kind of chemicals on the scalp as they often make the scalp dry and worsen the problem. Excessive dryness is another cause of dandruff. Oil your hair once or twice a week. Warm a little hair oil and apply on your scalp and hair partings with a cotton ball and gently massage the scalp with your finger tips in a circular motion. Give a hot towel treatment to scalp to feed the hair roots.
Anti-dandruff shampoos are available in the market. They add some relief to the problem. However, one should not use medicated shampoos for a longer period of time as it weakens the roots and dulls the texture of your scalp and hair. Therefore, treat this problem as early as possible when detected. A
pplication of stale curd (which is 2 or 3 days old,) gives good results. Apply the curd all over the scalp. Wash and rinse your hair after half an hour. Hair becomes soft and silky smooth with this treatment. Continue this treatment every alternate day until the dandruff leaves your scalp.
Amla (gooseberry) is another effective measure to cure dandruff. Apply raw Amla (gooseberry) juice to the scalp or soak 1 tbsp of Amla powder overnight and rinse your hair the next morning with warm water. Amla (gooseberry) treatment makes your hair roots stronger in a couple of applications.
Tomato pulp offers good growth of hair. Squeeze a lime in the fresh tomato pulp and apply it on the scalp. Apart from the cure, it conditions the hair, too.
Vinegar rinse is another effective measure to sure dandruff. After you shampoo your hair, rinse it with a mug of water mixed with a cup of malt vinegar. In acute cases, rub pure malt vinegar on the scalp and wash it after half an hour.
Black pepper too is a good remedy for dandruff. Take a few pepper corns, grind them with milk and apply it on the scalp. Pepper oil massage is very fruitful.
In cases of stubborn dandruff, it requires a prolonged treatment. Cetramide solution provides very effective results. Follow the instructions while using the solution. Kitoconazole shampoo is great for this purpose. If the dandruff is too stubborn, use Kitoconazole cream and dilute it with a little malt vinegar. Apply on the partings of the hair one hour before you shower.
Steroid treatments can also be suggested, if the problem is serious and old. Before using and kind of medicine, one should consult a skin specialist or a dermatologist, as side effects from these medicines cannot be ruled out.
