There are many pet choices for folks who dwell in apartments. Most are standard pets that many people choose regardless of living arrangements. Some considerations, like noise a pet can make, should be made by apartment resident when selecting certain pets, such as dogs or birds. Dogs can make excellent apartment pets but care must be exercised when selecting the type, temperament, activity level and, occasionally, the size of the dog. Most small dogs do well with apartment living provided they are not too terribly active or hyper. Poodles, for example, may be able to get a good bit of exercise just by running around the apartment. This coupled with several potty walks a day would be enough activity for not only Poodles, but other small breeds as well. Some of the better choices are Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus and Yorkshire Terriers. Small breeds that would not be as good a choice would include super hyper Jack Russell Terriers, Beagles and other active or working breeds. Don't be put off if you are not a 'small dog' person, as some larger breeds can do well in an apartment setting as well. Some Companion breeds like the Chow Chow and Dalmatian require less activity or exercise than more active or working dogs like Labs, Australian Shepherds and Border Collies. The latter three breeds are examples of poor apartment dogs. Keep in mind that these breeds are just used as a general overview for good and bad choices. Dogs, regardless of breed, can all have vastly different temperaments and activity levels.
Cats are probably the next best choice. Cats are clean, quiet, loving pets that are quite comfortable to live their entire lives indoors. They are easily trained to use a litter box and just as easily trained to do other things like not scratch the furniture or come when called. There are many different breeds, types, colors and hair lengths to choose from. A trip to a local animal shelter or rescue facility will showcase the many different choices and personalities available and needing a nice apartment life. Cats are a great choice for those that want a furry companion without the demands a dog can impose of its owner/guardian. Both cats and dogs require yearly vaccinations and monthly flea preventative.
The third awesome apartment pet would have to be small or caged pets. This is a wide category including rodents, rabbits and ferrets as well as members of the reptile/amphibian classes. Pets like moderate sized snakes, lizards, frogs and turtles all
