Travel destinations: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Created on: August 08, 2009

Buenos Aires must be one of the world's most exciting cities! It never sleeps! There are as many people thronging the streets at night as there are during the day. For the tourist, there is so much to see and enjoy that careful planning is essential.

Accommodations

http://www.tripadvisor.com is a good place to start looking for a hotel within your price range. Tripadvisor has a list of 347 hotels in Buenos Aires, with prices, locations and, most importantly, helpful comments from other tourists. Tripadvisor also has an information sidebar with lots of interesting advice, plus an up-to-the-minute forum where you can follow the threads on any topic, or ask your own questions before you go.

Getting Around

The easiest way to get around the city is by bus. Buses run all the time and are very cheap. You will find the locals are very willing to help if you are not sure which bus to take, although, most hotels will freely offer information on transportation. There is also an over-ground train, that is useful if you want to travel any distance in Buenos Aires, and, of course, there are always taxis. The main station in Buenos Aires is in Retiro, down by the docks, and this is a good place to start exploring as it is within easy reach of La Recoleta, The Museum of Fine Arts (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes) and the Colon Theatre (Teatro Colon).

La Recoleta

Recoleta is considered an up-market area for the wealthy of Buenos Aires. It is home to the famous La Recoleta cemetery, the resting place of Evita Duarte Peron, the most famous woman in Argentine history. It is an amazing sight; the family mausoleums look just like streets of little houses in a spooky little city. Only the most wealthy and influential people of Buenos Aires are laid to rest there. In the surrounding streets are fine examples of French-style architecture as well as some of the finest restaurants in the city. The cemetery is also home to dozens of feral cats that gather by the gates in the evening to be fed by the local populace.

Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes

It is only a short walk from La Recoleta to this museum which has lots of pieces by well-known artist such as Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt, El Greco, Goya, , Corot, Monet, Sisley Modigliani and Picasso among many others. The museum is free of charge and is a delight to wander around.

Teatro Colon

This is a most beautiful theatre and there are tours for English speakers during the day at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Spanish speakers can join a tour at any time
