Writing is a rewarding endeavor that many people choose to undertake. There are those that do it as a hobby to relax while others choose to write for a living. Some dream of writing for a living while others decide writing for a living isn't for them. Why do they choose not to write for a living? There are a number of reasons.
Fear is something that can prevent a lot of people from choosing to write for a living. Whether it's fear of failure or not being able to be the type of writer they want to be fear is very real for some people. There are those that have a severe stress reaction when it comes to the thought of writing for a living. It's as if the air is being sucked out of them.
Some people fear attempting to write for a living. They are afraid of both success and failure at the same time. Then there is the fear that they won't make enough to take care of themselves as a writer. Writing for a living means that you have to have enough clients to cover the expenses that you have.
The long hours and possibility of being rejected can keep some people from deciding to write for a living. While the current job they hold might not provide them with the freedom they would like they know when they work and how much they make. The ideal situation would be to work as much or as little as they want and when they think this will never be the case they decide not to write at all.
Writers especially those just starting out aren't able to pick and choose what they write. They have even less control over the hours they are keeping in the beginning. The deadlines they get can be extremely tight which can cut into the time they would normally spend with their family. The possibility of having to give up even a little family time can be an off putting factor.
Then there are those that would simply prefer to keep writing as a hobby and form of therapy. They love to write but somehow the idea of making it a career means that they are no longer in control of their writing. Then there is the fear of being only a ghostwriter without any hopes of ever seeing their name on the written work.
No matter what the reason someone decides not to write for a living they are the only ones that know the actual reason.
