Of the different kinds of apples available in grocery stores, the qualities of each greatly vary, as do the preferences of each person. The best way to go about finding your favorite apple is to try them all. However, if you already know what type of fruit you like (tangy, sweet, etc.), you can narrow it down considerably.

Red Delicious: These were initally bred to have a delicious-looking red color. The apple breeders were successful in this, but they unfortunately failed to take into account what the apples tasted like. The result was a relatively bland (but still on the sweet side), crisp apple.

Golden Delicious: Completely unrelated to the Red Delicious, the Golden Delicious is very sweet and slightly soft.

McIntosh: These apples are crisp on the outside but almost soft on the inside. They have a tart, tangy flavor.

Fuji: These large apples have are very crisp and very sweet.

Gala: Though they are large, crisp, and sweet like the Fuji, they have a very different taste.

Granny Smith: These bright green apples are crisp and very tart/tangy.

Most people prefer different aspects of fruit over others (sweet/tart, crisp/soft, etc.). If you know what you prefer, you are well on your way to finding your favorite apple! Still, the only way to truly decide is to go out and taste them for yourself.
