Security is a major concern among internet users. It is important to keep your home computer secure from viruses, hackers, spy ware and other security threats. The following security tips are for use with a Windows-based operating system such as Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional and Windows 2003 Server.
In general, to secure your computer and network, you need to keep your operating system up to date, install an up-to-date anti-virus program and anti-spy ware program, apply security templates, apply security patches from Microsoft's website, install a firewall, and restrict who uses the computer and network.
In general, the internet is not a safe place for those who do not protect themselves. An unprotected online computer can be affected with viruses, malware, ad ware, and Trojans within only 20 minutes of being online.
There are numerous security risks on the internet that can lead you to serious financial loss and information theft. In addition, every time a computer is attacked with viruses or other threats, all of the connected computers on the same network are also affected. The most common online security threats include the following:
Viruses
Spyware
Ad ware
Mal ware
Hackers
Intruders
Trojans
There are many preventive measures, tools, and techniques that can be used to deal with these threats. If your computer is directly connected to the internet through a dial-up connection, DSL or cable, you need to connect a hardware firewall. It is also a good idea to install and configure a software firewall as well. In Windows XP there is a built in firewall installed that you can turn on and off through the control panel. Simply select "Network and Internet Connections" to find this firewall.
What are some other causes of security breaches? Bad or weak passwords are one of the most common causes of security compromise. A password should never be a word found in the dictionary. In addition, a password has less chance of being breached if it is changed regularly. When possible, use a combination of letters, numbers and spaces to make a strong password. One final tip for keeping your computer safe: Encrypt important files so that they can't be accessed and read by the unauthorized users.
If you follow the above tips you should have the basics covered when it comes to securing your computer and network. Above all else, remember to always be vigilant when it comes to security threats. It can be all too easy to let your guard down when security becomes a hassle. Always make security a priority and you will never have to deal with the aftermath of a breach.
