The best books about scuba diving

by L.S. Watts

Created on: August 07, 2009

There are hundreds of books on scuba diving, but not all of them are the best to learn from. Some books claim to be complete guides yet are lacking in complete information. Other books are simply to be used as supplements and not a definitive guide.

If you are looking to expand your scuba diving library, try to remember that many books tend to present the same information just in a different way with a different cover. You don't need every complete manual or supplement out there. Although you can find many money-saving deals online, consider going to a book store or diving store to look through the book before purchasing. Otherwise you could end up with a clutter of books all saying the same thing.

Listed here are a few books that are good to include in your library. There are many more books out there that would be great to have, but these should help most beginners get started as well as give a great review for accomplished divers.

Complete Diving Manual by Jack Jackson

This book lives up to its title. Every diver should have this book in their scuba diving library. It covers the science behind scuba diving, the physiology of scuba diving, equipment needed, basic training needed, types of diving, safety and first aid, and even some marine biology and oceanography that will be useful to know. When this book says it's the complete diving manual, they weren't kidding.

The Scuba Diving Handbook: The Complete Guide to Safe and Exciting Scuba Diving by John Bantin

This is another diving book that lives up to its name. There are numerous exercises and detailed practice programs. This book gives you a guide to go by when choosing a diving instructor. As with other books it also discusses the science behind scuba diving. Other topics include equipment failures, boat handling, deep diving, exploring wrecks, diving in shark infested waters, and so much more.

Scuba Diving by Dennis K. Graver

This book covers many topics regarding diving. It is perfect for beginners and easy to read for teens and adults. It will show you everything you need as diver and how to perform proper maintenance on the diving equipment. It is packed with charts and the scientific reasoning behind dive tables, buoyancy, and gas pressure to name a few.

DAN Pocket Guide to First Aid for Scuba Diving by Dan Orr and Bill Clendenen
