Things that are poisonous to cats

There are hundreds of things that are poisonous to cats inside and outside the home. This can range from things that will bring on an upset tummy to things that could cause their death. Cats are by nature curious and sometimes this instinct can get them in a heap of trouble especially in the things they ingest. To prevent harm coming to your cat you should be informed on the types of poisons that you may not even be aware of.

Houseplants

Inside your home you will find many toxic things that if ingested by your cat will make him very sick and the first of these are houseplants. Some of these plants we take for granted without realizing the dangers they present to our cats. There are many that have Aloe Vera around the house due to its healing abilities but for your cat it is a poison. If you received a flower arrangement that is bordered by baby's breath it can be very toxic to your cat. Amaryllis can cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. A plant known as Caladium can cause your cat to experience swelling of the mucous membranes.

You may think that a Christmas poinsettia is harmless and it is for us but not so for your cat. Poinsettias can cause dermatitis and digestive problems although they are still capable of making your cat sick, they are not as toxic as thought at first and the same applies to Crowns of Thorns. The Dieffenbachia otherwise known as Dumb Cane causes swelling of the mouth and throat. The Flamingo Lilly will cause the cat's mouth to burn immediately after chewing it.

The common Ivy can cause dermatitis in cats and if ingested in large amounts can cause convulsions, paralysis and vomiting. The Christmas or Jerusalem cherry holds berries but if these are ingested by your cat they can cause gastroenteritis and vomiting. Other poisonous plants are babies breathe, Bird of Paradise, Chrysanthemums, Eucalyptus, Ferns, Hydrangea, Philodendron, Sego Palm and even Mistletoe.

Foods that are poisonous

Some of the foods we eat may be good for you but not so for your cat. The Avocado fruit and seeds can cause havoc in your cats system. Chocolate can be very toxic when ingested by your cat and should be avoided at all cost. Onions, garlic, and root type plants can cause anemia in your cat. Bone scraps should never be given to a cat. they are not meant to consume bones and it can pose a host of problems such as getting stuck in the throat causing choking, slivers of bone can get embedded in the digestive system or in the worst case scenario can block
