The benefits of building your own computer

by Thomas Walters

Created on: August 07, 2009

I myself am writing this article on a computer I built myself. This, like many others was a computer I bought all the components for and put together so just why do I think building your computer is a good idea? When you buy a computer ready-made you are usually buying something with components from all over the place. It is very rare that you will be buying a computer whereby you have an understanding of every single component inside where it came from and whether or not the company that produced it is reputable. Therefore you are limiting your overall understanding of the machine you are spending so much money on.

Surely if you are spending a large amount of money on a computer, the more you know about it the better? I believe so. When you build a computer yourself you are able to choose each component separately and individually. You are able to read up on the item and find out other people's opinions, while at the same time inspecting the individual specifications of the product. Many people may feel more comfortable knowing exactly where the component came from, and that the company that makes it is a reliable one. With buying from many companies come warranties. When you buy all your components separately you receive warranties' that mean you will be able to make sure that your product is going to last as long as it says it will. It also means that you will in many cases receive support for each component meaning if something goes wrong, chances are the person you speak to for support will know more about what they are talking about.

When you build your own PC you have a greater level of control over what is going into the machine. Perhaps you don't want that motherboard with that RAM. This level of control means that you have an easy sense of customization. If you are a gamer you can spend more on your graphics card; if you have loads of photos and videos you can spend more on storage, you get the idea. With this control you also get upgradability meaning that if, in the future you buy an application that won't run on your machine, you can simply pop the cover and upgrade whatever component you want!

Lastly the matter of cost. Building your PC will cost significantly less than it would to buy a computer of the same specification from a manufacturer. These savings can be translated into buying software for your PC and other upgrades that may come later. It is also important to note that you won't have a PC full up of trial software from the company you bought it from you will save time on uninstalling this software and have a better experience along the way.

Oh and did I mention you might just learn something!
