The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Christianity as, conformity to the Christian religion. In order to conform, one must accept that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He came and willingly died on the cross for the sins of the world. He was buried, and rose from the dead on the third day, then ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of God.

The central belief in Christianity is that all of humanity is in a fallen state of sin. There isn't anything anyone can do on their own good deeds or merit to gain forgiveness of their sins. No matter how many charities they may donate to with finances or time and talents, people cannot escape their sinful nature on their own. It is this reason that God brought into this world His Son, Jesus Christ. It is through Him and Him alone that mankind can have their sins forgiven, and it is belief in Him that righteousness is imputed to us. In Romans 4:3 (NKJV) Paul wrote, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." Abraham believed God and Him alone.

In the Old Testament, the children of Israel would turn to God, and be obedient for a while, after a while they would turn to other beliefs. Whenever they were following God, God blessed them, and when they followed after other beliefs, God would send other nations that would drive them out of the Promised Land.

In the Book of Daniel, there is the account of Daniel's friends Meshach, Shadrach, and Abed-Nego. They were commanded by the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, to kneel down and worship an idol created by the king. Daniel's three friends were believers in the one true God, and refused to bow down and worship any other god. Nebuchadnezzar ordered that these three men be bound and put into a fiery furnace, which he commanded also that the heat be raised seven times more than it was usually heated. The heat was so hot that it killed the men that put these three into the furnace. Then the king looked into the furnace and was amazed to find that there were four men that were not bound and walking around in the midst of the fire, and he said that the fourth man look as the Son of God. The king spoke saying, "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here." Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire, Daniel 3:26 (NKJV). The following scriptures go on to say that the fire had no effect on their bodies, clothes or hair. In fact, not even the smell of fire was in their clothes.
