The little black dress has transcended every fashion trend from the 1920's to the present. It is the quintessential wardrobe piece that can be worn in a multitude of ways. The masterpiece of Coco Chanel, it is the most versatile piece of a woman's wardrobe, and any woman that doesn't have one is doing themselves a complete disservice by committing a cardinal sin in the world of fashion. The little black dress, or LBD, can be worn at the office, on a date, to a nightclub or to lunch with the girls. It is versatile, and the same dress, when worn different ways, can create a look of sophistication, romanticism, girlishness, professionalism and sex appeal.

When purchasing an LBD, choose a cut that is timeless and not trendy. An A-line, sheath or wrap style will be more versatile and avoid pinpointing the time period from which it came. Avoid mini or maxi cut styles, as neither will be quite as versatile. A simple classic cut with a hemline right around the knee is best. A simple V-neck, one that isn't too deep, is the most flattering fit for most people. Once you find that perfect black dress, you're ready to see the magic it can work.

To wear a little black dress at the office, pair it with a tailored jacket. The color of the jacket is optional. A tailored bloused or cashmere sweater worn over it are also options. Choose whatever you feel comfortable in. Pair it with a kitten heeled shoe or a pair of peep-toe heels. Jewelry should be simple and classic. Gold hoop earrings, a simple gold chain, a strand of pearls, or diamond studs are all good choices. When dressing for the office, it is best to play it safe and choose classic accessories to pair with it.

If a weekend lunch with girlfriends is the duty bestowed upon the little black dress, comfort is probably key. This is the time to add your own unique, individual touches. On cooler days, layer a textured turtleneck or patterned blouse underneath. You could also toughen the look with a sleek leather jacket. Another option is to wear a cute cropped jacket over the dress. The colors and styles are endless. You could add a brightly colored belt to the waist. In this setting you can wear it with chic flats, heels, or tall boots. Try it with textured leggings or tights and ankle booties. Pair with an oversized leather hobo bag in a bright color. Large, chunky jewelry is also becoming. A turquoise necklace, bangles, a gold cuff, chandelier earrings or large hoops are all adequate possibilities.
