Parents seldom realize that they have many subconcious ideas about their children before they are even born. In our own minds we try and project ourselves onto our offspring. If a father is a sports fanatic, they most likely want their bouncing baby boy picking up a catchers mitt at the age of five. If the mother is a "proper lady" they want their lovely daughter to be the picture of perfectness. These subconcious images that we hold for our children tell the parents what to do that will hopefully make them turn out just like them.
The opposite sex parent is usually freeds from these subconcious images. Many fathers find themselves the object of their daughters affection because they don't give the child ANY "rules" for being. The mother's of sons conversely often are able to distance themselves from the preconceived notions of what the child "SHOULD BE" that herald in self doubt and relationship problems.
Parents want their children to be happy, and in doing so often force their children to do anything but what the child needs to do to BE happy. It is only through patience and understanding that anyone can grow up to be a well rounded person.
