Dorm room furniture needs to portable, inexpensive, multi-purpose and not too large. Thinking about all these requirements makes one think that it is impossible to find anything that meets all of these requirements. Actually the college student market is one that manufacturers cater to. Many stores have aisles lined with great inexpensive, stylish and portable furniture items for dorm rooms.

Futons are the mainstay of dorm room furniture. Depending on the amount of money spent on the futon, these can vary from $100-400 commonly. To find one less expensive, take a look at thrift stores or talk to older college students who may be looking to get rid of theirs. The great aspect of futons is that they are easily portable. Butterfly chairs consist of a folding metal frame with a cloth or canvas cover that spreads over the frame in a butterfly shape. Sphere chairs are very similar to butterfly chairs. They have the same basic premise of the metal frame covered with a colorful fabric except that the shape of the chair is round. It has all of the same qualities as the butterfly chair in that it is light, easily portable, foldable and stylish. These are in the same price range of $30-100.
Ottoman with storage
Many stores have started carrying small square and round ottomans. These are a great choice because they are multi-purpose. Because dorm rooms don't have a lot of storage, the ottoman can be a great place to store DVD's, snacks or books. In addition the top is padded so it can work as additional seating. Bean bag chairs are an old college standby and they still are great. They come in many great fabrics, are comfortable and very portable. These inexpensive dorm room chairs can be found priced as low as $15.
