Do you need a chronic and/or fatal disease to see your general practitioner? Absolutely not. In the same way, it is not necessary to have a serious psychological problem to receive counseling.
The way the media displays therapy, it can, at times, seem like one needs to be psychotic to benefit from it. However, that allegation is far from true. In fact, everyone can benefit from therapy if they truly want to, and if they are willing to put in the effort.
Nobody's life is anywhere near perfect. There are situations beyond our control, and sometimes those situations can become extremely overwhelming. Whether you need help with some coping tips, or you just need an understanding ear, therapy can help. Therapists are people trained to be understanding and empathetic, and they can help you with what you are dealing with.
Realistically speaking, everyone has their vices. You may not be a cutter or a compulsive gambler; however, there is bound to be a harmful habit or something that you could use help with. For example, maybe your anger tends to get out of control, and tends to get the best of you sometimes; speaking to a professional could help with that.
If you are feeling down more often then normal, or you are feeling overly anxious, a consultation with a therapist or counselor can be extremely helpful. Just like you would go see your doctor for a sore throat of flu-like symptoms, it is sometimes necessary to visit a therapist or counselor to help alleviate the problems in our lives and/or mental health.
There are also times in life when it feels like nobody understands what you are going through, nobody cares what you are feeling, nobody is there to listen, etc. Talking to a therapist or counselor can be extremely helpful because he or she will understand what you are going through, he or she will care what you are feeling, and he or she is there to listen to what you have to say, and can offer you insight and advice.
Just because a person sees a therapist or counselor does not mean that he or she should be in a straight jacket or in a mental institution. Not every patient in your general practitioner's waiting room needs to be admitted to the hospital, so in the same way, not everybody in a therapist's waiting room needs to be admitted anywhere. Sometimes there are situations in life that we do not know how to control, and do not know how to cope with, so there is no shame in getting help with coping with life.
