Writing for Helium: How to obtain feedback for your writing

by Laurie Childree

Created on: August 05, 2009

Helium offer writers millions of topics in a variety of channels that they can write about. The articles written eventually settle into their proper places through ratings. Ratings can take time to settle and this is something that the writer should remember. The writer might wonder how they can get feedback about their writing. There are a variety of ways that this can be done.

Peer Critique

Helium writers can obtain feedback from other members of the community by sending a request to peer critique. The link to the article will be posted and members of the community will post their thoughts on the article. Any areas that might have been bothering the writer can be addressed. It's often extremely helpful to the writer.

Ratings Feedback

Not only will ratings place the articles in place compared to other articles but it gives the raters a chance to give feedback about the articles presented to them. A link allows raters to contact the article writer without ever knowing who they are. The rater can make the writer aware of problems with formatting, punctuation and grammar errors.

One of the biggest pieces of feedback the writer obtains is usually the ranking of the article itself. It can be that the articles aren't settled in ranking or that the writer is missing something that they can easily correct with leapfrog.

Leapfrog

When the writer feels that an article isn't right they have the option of leaping it with revisions. Whether or not the leapfrog is accepted will tell the writer whether or not the community liked the changes better than the original. The revised or original article then goes through another round of ratings. The final round should tell the writer how raters felt this time. If they don't like the results they can leap again in about a week.

Contact The Writer

The contact the writer button allows readers (community members) to contact the writer about their articles. The reader can then give the writer a complement or suggestion on the article that they have just read. It is preferred that those using this function do it nicely and tactfully. While pointing out errors is appreciated there is no need to pick the article apart word by word. The things that stick out are the most helpful.

There are several ways that a Helium writer can obtain feedback for their writing. They can ask for it, ratings can reflect it or they can get messages from members.
