Most people don't notice how many endangered species there are until it's too late. No one paid any mind to the Dusky Seaside Sparrow. Its "salt marshed habitat" was sprayed with DDT and was eventually taken over by the space program. The last dusky died in 1987. But now voices are being heard across the nation, but will the hunting stop? No, I don't think so but the more we fight and the more we protest, more laws will be formed and other species will rise out of the endangered zone and back to recovery. But how can you help? You can start in your own community. Make posters, send emails, make phone calls. The simplest thing that you can do is just spread the word and that WILL have a major impact.
It's up to us to protect the ones like the Santa Catalina Island Fox, the Mount Graham Red Squirrel, and the Wolverine. They need our help, some worst than others so why do so many of us choose to ignore their voices?
But now there are more of them, their voices more clearer. Headlines flaring with breaking news of polar bear endangerment. Why did we let it get this far? Why didn't we try to stop it earlier, why did we make it worst? Because to us, it's the survival of the fittest. Too bad so many didn't survive and so many aren't. Some like the Woodland Caribou might not make it. Some like the Bog Turtle did. But the ones like the Dusky Seaside Sparrow didn't. We choose to ignore the problems because none of us have the guts to look an endangered/threatened specie in the eye and say, "You're not worth it." Nor do any of us feel the need to say, "I'm sorry" or "It was my fault." Sometimes it's easier to forgive and forget. But you can't forget something you haven't been forgiven for. The species that we've lost don't need to say that they are sorry but they do need to hear it. I grew up without getting to see a dinosaur. I don't want my child to grow up and never see a polar bear or a lion or maybe even a dog?
Don't take advantage of what you have because you know you don't deserve it. So think before you go hunting or before you go on your annual fishing trip. Every single specie out there with a heartbeat has a voice. One that is suffering pain and neglect. We don't fear them, they fear us. Just like animals kill animals. Not people. People kill people. So why do we kill them?
