Tips for participating in online classes

If you've never taken an online class before, you may be unsure whether you can handle the special challenges of distance learning. Students take online classes for the flexibility it offers, especially older, or working people, but it requires a lot of self-discipline. If you're taking your first online class, try some of these tips to make your class trouble free.

1. FAQs: Most schools supply FAQs to distance learning students. These usually address concerns previous students have faced. Reading through them should help you avoid problems others have already faced.

2. ONLINE CLASS WORKSHOP: Many schools have a workshop (often available online) which introduces new students to the class format. You will learn how to use in-class email to contact your instructor and other students, how to take quizzes and tests, and how to post assignments on the bulletin board. This is an extremely valuable tool that you should before your class starts.

3. ORDER BOOKS AND SUPPLIES: Several weeks before the start of class you should order your books and supplies. You can get the text title and edition from the college, then order it online, or pick it up in the campus bookstore. It's important to have the correct book, on time, so you don't miss any assignments.

4. CLASS CALENDAR: It's extremely important to locate the class calendar. If your class doesn't have one, make your own. Mark due dates for all assignments. You might include a weekly schedule with a set time you attend class. Print out your calendar and keep where you'll see it frequently so you don't forget your class.

5. ANNOUNCEMENTS AND EMAIL: Be sure to log in to the class regularly to check announcements and emails. You need to know what's going on in the class, so you don't want to miss important news.

6. PARTICIPATION: Most teachers require participation. An online class often uses the message board as a substitute for sitting in class. Take the time to write quality messages and post them on the bulletin board regularly, especially if they are for a grade.

7. ASK QUESTIONS: Just because the teacher can't see your raised hand, it doesn't mean you can't ask questions! Don't be afraid to post your question on the bulletin board, or, if it's personal, email or instant message your instructor. He, or she, is there to help you.

8. PACE YOUR WORK: Make sure you keep up with your class work. Some classes are self-paced, so you can work completely at your leisure. If you wait until the end of the semester, then try to get everything done in the last week, it's nearly impossible to get a good grade.

9. GET A STUDY PARTNER: Any class is easier when you have a study partner. Before you register for your class, you might find another person who wants to take the same class. Or you might post a request for a study partner on the bulletin board in the online class. You can ask each other questions, help each other with technology issues, and even team up for online activities.

There are literally thousands of online classes available to students. Check your college bulletin, or take one from across the country. If you've followed the tips above, you should have a fun, and rewarding class.
