How having a negative mindset can undermine your weight-loss attempts

There is a good chance that you are reading this article right now because you suspect there is more to weight loss than simply picking up any diet and having a go at it. In fact, it might be that you have gone through two or more diet plans, did not see desirable results and dropped out early. Do not worry, this writer can completely relate to that.

This writer made a goal in January to lose four kilograms each month, thus losing twenty kilograms in five months, hoping to become the fat-to-slim success story everyone dreams of. Well, what do you think happened? Two months down the line, many walks and dieting restrictions later and I had only lost about three kilos. It did not show much and driven by sadness, soon the walks tapered off to occasional guilt-inspired strolls and the plates started piling up with food again. Can you spot the blaring error? It was the negative attitude towards weight-loss attempts that got to me. If something similar has happened to you, I hope this article will help you!

What is this negative mindset? Very simply, it is about viewing your efforts in a pessimistic light once being an attempt to shed weight, which eventually hampers all the motivation to look good, and later turns the whole process around. The sad part it, it is all in the mind a case of seeing the glass of water half empty rather than half full and it can definitely be avoided.

Being a little more specific and narrating some symptoms might make this clearer: typically, a feeling of despair when you consider taking up a weight loss plan, thinking it will not work out anyway. The half-hearted attempt to try the plan or even a fully motivated approach soon succumbs to ever increasing expectations of a sudden loss of massive amounts of weight and a burst of appreciation from friends and family. In the later stages, the person has already all but given up the dieting plan and that formality too is done away with as he or she slips into a state of anger, hurt, depression and denial. A few months later, they may try again but the whole cycle will likely repeat itself with the same devastating consequences, unless of course someone recognizes the main problem and treats it once and for all.

How does the negative attitude develop? Where does such strong pessimism come from? Repeated attempts to lose weight in the past, being obese since childhood, having to face jokes and taunts about your body, being around slim and smartly dressed people all the time
