Anika lived in a little cottage near the small, smelly river. Anika lived with her parents. Her mother made jewels out of coloured beads. Her father was a farmer. Every morning Anika would wake up with the sound of the little birds chirping on her bedroom window. It was really very early. Anika was just three years old and she lay alone in her bed watching the birds. Oh! she loved those beautiful little birds. There were two of them. She watched the birds playing and feeding each other. She gazed at them and made little noises to get their attention. But the birds did not hear her. Anika lay in bed wishing she had a little sister or brother to talk and play with. But all she had was a poor, old ragged, teddy bear to call her very own. Her teddy's name was Tolly. Tolly had no nose, his ears were half eaten up. But Tolly had a big mouth with a big smile. Tolly's eyes had two holes. He couldn't look at her. But Anika was happy to see Tolly always smiling at her. She loved Tolly very much. Tolly was her only true friend.
One bright morning, Anika walked down the path to the river side. She took Tolly with her. Anika sat on a small rock and watched little fishes swimming. She was so excited and started shouting. She threw little pebbles into the water. Little Tolly was sitting on her lap. Anika got up to pick some more pebbles, she forgot about Tolly and poor Tolly fell into the river. Anika shouted "Tolly ! "Tolly!" but Tolly did not hear. The water swept away Tolly. Anika was very sad, she began to cry. Now, she had no friend, her only best friend had been washed away. She heard her mother yell, " Anika!" "Anika!" where are you? Her mother was very angry to find Anika at the river side. She spanked Anika and put her to bed. Anika was even more sad, she lost Tolly and her mother had spanked her. She dropped off to sleep and there in her dream, she could see Tolly. But when she awoke she was alone. Poor , Anika she had no friend.
The next day the little birds again started to chirp and play. Anika went to the window and watched them closely. One bird had a big black patch on its eye , it spotted Anika. At first it was afraid, but Anika smiled and smiled at the bird. She whispered, I love you , I love you, will you be my friend. All of a sudden the bird, looked at Anika, as if it was smiling back at Anika. Anika whispered again I love you, I love you, will you be my friend? The little black bird pecked at the window as if to say I love you,
