The best use for a spork

by David O'Brien

Created on: August 04, 2009

Who even knew such a term existed, before fast food came into our lives. Now we known the term spork, like it should have a tray designed in our kitchen drawer.A interesting tool, that I think could be better designed.

If the spork was made from a metal compound, I think it should have a serrated edge toward the back of the spoon. This would keep the mouth from getting cut, but allowing one to cut some meats we routinely eat. A formal setting is nice for family and guests, but when some leftovers beacon, which are destine for scrap, why not allow this tool to also cut like a knife? There will always be the time and place for two handed assists, to use the knife and fork as a team. But when something like stubborn veggies cause you to look like a starved ravenous beast, just think how this tool could assist. Keeping our youth in mind, why not have even more than one type of spork? One with this edge I mentioned, and also the typical style we have all seen. Heck, we could even have a switch spork, and carry it everywhere we go. Forget the hunting knife, or even the need for a fillet knife. Just reach for that friendly spork, and our worries are gone.

Now I can tell you the worst use of a spork, would be to rob a bank with one. I can't say the results would be favorable. The best use is for a baked potato. Great for peas and cut carrots. Cake and ice cream, it covers both. Cereal is impossible with a fork. Can measure coffee with a fork either. The term "stick a fork in it", may possibly need to change. It really is a nice tool to use around the house, or camping. Most versions are plastic, with a need to be upgraded to metal. Maybe someday silverware sets will come equipped with sporks. That may take a while.

Let me close by saying we all have some distinct need when it comes to a spork. The next time you have an extra one given to you, put it aside knowing where it is, able to reach for it, if the time comes. You may even be surprised just how happy this piece of plastic is in a pinch. Who would have ever thought this simple tool, could be known across the land by all.
