The year is 2009. The president of the United States is African-American. The world is experiencing change in multiple forms, some good, some inevitably bad. War, poverty, health care and unemployment are but a few of America's important issues that should be top priorities. The powers that be have seemingly forgotten that people are starving, and many Americans are homeless. There has been more news coverage and public concern over the details surrounding Michael Jackson's death, or rather President Obama's choice of jeans, as opposed to issues that are more relevant to social reform. The question must be asked, Is it possible that society has its priorities confused?
The answer is definitely yes! At a time when many American's should be counting their blessings and saving their cash, many have become more consumed with trivial aspects of living. It's a fact that we've become a society of instant gratification, regardless if we actually have the cash or not. This mindset has contributed to Americans having the lowest personal savings rate in the industrialized world, according to David Walker, former U.S. comptroller general. Americans save, on average, 1 percent of their income while consuming 72 percent. The Chinese, on the other hand, saved on average 35 percent of income while consuming only 38 percent. (Bryan Jackson, 2009) It's no coincidence that China owns a 50% stake in the US dollar. Why does another country own half our money?
Americans are worried about jeans right now! As a result, we don't have time to study the facts laid in front of us. With the automobile industry in shambles, it should not matter whether the person who has the power to effect great change wears stylish $500 jeans, or mom jeans that are far from fashionable. Jeans do not affect social reform. The lust for the latest fashion does however contribute the national bankruptcy rate, and our country's inability to satisfy an ever growing deficit. Our priorities need to change.
The process of change begins with the man in the mirror. Michael Jackson asked him to change his ways years ago. Nobody listened and look at us now. As a nation, we're in worst shape now than we have ever been. One needs to understand that the United States is a trillion dollar corporation, and its inhabitants are the employees. With any great corporation, success is only possible through great leadership, and the harmonious cooperation of competent workers. Change will come only when we realize our roles in society, and allow this discovery to change our thought process. The choices we make are crucial to us being able to facilitate the change that everyone would like to see happen.
