Christian understanding of obedience

by Marshall Brown

Created on: August 03, 2009

It has always been passed down through the generations that obedience is prime in Christianity. The same applies to most religions throughout history. The difference that can be expressed through Christianity, is the unity of God and man as not fear being the advocate of obedience, rather the loving relationship between Christ and his followers. Through love obedience is ensued. As a good father or mother teaches obedience through nurturing, likewise has it passed on through Christ that obedience is based on the natural process and no longer a force based on fear of God.

By learning and applying the teachings of Christ into daily life, we have not just an obligation to obedience, but are compelled to obey through what has become a part of our daily routine in life. Christianity has evolved in it's own way, back to the origin of Christ's words. The teaching to let what is good come naturally from the person, and expressing it outwardly. That obedience is more of a relationship that binds all that is good to the same message, love. Through love there can be no disobedience, but through it comes all things that are good. From practicing and sharing love, we become obedient through freewill. If someone were to obey just because another tells them that a certain action is right, they have failed to understand true obedience.

That is what separates Christianity from most, but not all religions. To be obedient because you are fulfilling what you really "are" rather than because you "must" has it's own rewards. When we have to struggle with obedience, our nature is not compelled to do good. "Straight and narrow is the path to the Kingdom of Heaven." Likewise, "Either be cold or hot or you will be spewn out." What we are compelled to do on a daily basis becomes our nature, and likewise we are compelled to project our nature outwardly. Being obedient in Christianity, cannot be achieved without it being the natural part of a person's "being." "For I have chosen you, not you who have chosen me."

It is necessary for all Christians to realize that they are chosen, no matter what background, religion, or race they come from. The heart shall be the judge of the soul, and obedience is shown through the flesh projecting from the true spirit of the man. To struggle is to not be free, to follow your true nature is the path to enlightenment.
