Groceries are a rather large expense especially when it comes to feeding a family instead of just one person. There will be a variety of tastes and in some cases even food allergies or special dietary needs that have to be considered when doing the shopping. All these things combined can cause the average shopper to spend a great deal more than they bargained for it they aren’t careful.

There are some easy ways to save money on groceries. They are simple and only require that you pay attention to what you are doing. When it comes to groceries you can't eliminate the expense but you can reduce it so that the strain on your budget isn’t as great while still having enough food to keep the entire family satisfied.

Cash

We live in a world of convenience. Most of us write checks or swipe some type of card at checkout. This practice can easily put you over budget and sometimes send you into debt just to purchase groceries. Taking cash to the store and leaving the cards at home will prevent you from over spending. You can't spend money you don't have with you. The amount of money you take with you should be just enough to cover the costs of your purchases when the taxes are added.

Brands

Compare the brands. Just because something is a name brand doesn't automatically make it better. There are times when the generic and store brands are just as good as the national brand but will cost you less. When it comes to finding these brands avoid shopping at eye level because this is where the stores normally place the more expensive items. (Check the unit price.)

Quantities and Expiration Dates

Buy just the quantities that you will actually use without having to throw anything out. When you buy things that are too large you increase the chance of wasting items. Checking the expiration dates on the items you are buying will help you to use them before they expire. Expired food is a waste of money.

The family sizes are often cheaper per unit than the individual items. However unless you are actually going to use the contents of those packs in a decent length of time they are a waste of money. Even the freezer doesn't keep things forever, only buy these sizes if you can keep them fresh. If only one person in the house eats a particular item then it makes sense to buy the smaller size.

Plan Ahead

Planning meals ahead of time will help to save you money. When you plan meals ahead of time you'll know what you need before you leave the house. Sticking to the list you made for your meals will help to prevent impulse purchases. When you plan for making meals out of things that you can make more than one meal out of then you can buy less.

Avoid Convenience

Convenience foods are costly. You can reduce the grocery spending a great deal by avoiding the frozen dinners. Making your own meals may be more work but it'll save you. These basic tips for saving money on groceries are easy to follow and remember.
