Wow, this is a question that can be pondered for years to come. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. Are you a fan of the quarterback and the deep ball? What about the elusive scat back , or maybe it's the bulldozing back that looks for the contact. Let us not forget about the speedy wideout or the possession receiver.
Now I've just mentioned a few positions that many great players have occupied, and those were just offensive positions. But out of all of the players who ever played the game of football, who is your favorite? Who was the guy that you would travel to see play? The guy who no matter what kind of game he had, good or bad, you always felt that he dominated. For me, I would have to say that guy was Walter Payton.
One of the main reasons for this is because the Bears used to be my favorite team. I grew up in the 80's and it seemed like everytime I watched a football game, the Bears were playing. Which was not a bad thing because the Bears were a very good team, but Walter Payton was such a great running back. He had an incredible combination of graceful aggression. By that I mean that he could glide down the football and hurdle over a defender, land on his feet and punish the next defender by lowering his shoulder and stepping in the defenders chest.now that is football!
Just to make it fair, I have to pick a defensive player to match it even it out. Of course there are plenty options, but for my defensive guy, I will have to pick Lawrence Taylor. Lawrence Taylor was just a sheer beast! He was so aggressive when attacking the ball carrier. He did not just want to make the tackle, but he wanted to take the player out of the game. Having that mentality did not make him a dirty player,. On the contrary, it made him one of the best players ever. The collisions he caused on the field were fantastic and I loved to watch every last one of them! Lawrence Taylor, the real LT before there was ever a LaDanian Tomlinson. Plainly put, he was a monster on the football field, lightning bolt earring and all!
Although there are plenty of players out there who are ,and were great, Sweetness himself, Walter Payton, has to be my guy. But you make your own decision. Who is your favorite?!
