No one wants flat, dull hair. Next time you head out to your beauty salon or local drugstore, check out the shampoo and conditioner aisle. There, you will find many shampoos and conditioners that are specifically made to give volume to flat and lifeless hair. In addition to using these specialized shampoos and conditioners, you can do other things that will improve the texture and the volume of your hair without spending an extra dime.
With all the choices out there, you will get a headache spending on and trying out all those different shampoos and conditioners that claim they will give you voluminous hair. A few suggestions come to mind:
Burt's Bees
Almost 100% all-natural, Burt's Bees "Volumizing" shampoo and conditioner will add lots of volume to your hair without adding grease or leaving your hair feeling frizzy and dry. However, these shampoos and conditioners are not cheap; they will usually run $8 a bottle.
Christophe "Beverly Hills"
Christophe joined the bandwagon when it came out with its sulfate-free shampoo formula. But, when you purchase their volumizing shampoo, don't forget to read the label carefully. This one has sulfates. This is also a rather expensive brand, but the shampoo will nonetheless do the trick.
Samy Fat Hair "0" Calories
Also a non-sulfate formula, this shampoo is great for people who have medium-very oily hair. Though not specifically called a "volumizing" shampoo (it is called a thickening shampoo) this one will probably do wonders for your hair.
As with all shampoos, it is, unfortunately, better if you experiment with different brands. For some, one brand of shampoo will be better than another. Just because you read a glowing review does not mean that the shampoo will work similarly for you.
Apart from using volumizing shampoos, you can also do a few tricks that will cost you virtually nothing but still give you voluminous hair.
First, there is a hairstylist trick called "teasing" (or backcombing). Take a rattail comb, hairspray a section of hair, and comb the hair from tips to roots, eventually building up the amount of hair that is closest to the scalp. This will definitely damage hair, so it should only be done once in a while.
If your hair is particularly oily, never touch it with your bare hands. In fact, no one should touch their hair with their bare hands. Oil transfer from your hands to your hair will result in limp hair that is heavy with grease.
After you have taken a shower, allow your hair to air dry. Do not comb your hair while it is wet. The hair is most vulnerable when it is wet, and combing it at this time will result in flat hair. When you do comb your hair, do so by bending forward and allowing your hair to drape over your head, and comb (upside-down) from the roots to the tips.
