Poetry: Domestic abuse

by Barbara Kasey Smith

Created on: August 02, 2009

Emily sits here like a stone,
grief in her eyes and all alone.
Clothes are too large, dirty and frayed,
a door slams, jumps up and is afraid.
She's been here most of the day,
no place to go and no place to play.

She's one of the children who makes it on her own,
no-one to look after her or care if she's gone.
Dark circles bring out jet black eyes,
there's no more tears, no more does she cry.
It's been like this for as long as she's lived,
abused, unkempt, and seldom ever fed.

A little girl who strives to live on her own,
no-one who cares, no-one who welcomes her home.
She's taught herself what she knows,
turns her clothes inside out to hide her dirty clothes.
This little soul has feelings and needs love too,
often says, "God keeps me from getting sad and blue."

Emily's waiting for her day to come,
to play in lush fields and have some fun.
She doesn't give up because she knows one day,
she'll be free of heartaches, pains and terrible ways.
She says, "One day I'll be out on my own,
I'll be a Mother and I'll have a nice home."
