For most school-age kids, back to school is exciting and a much anticipated end of summer ritual. Shopping for new clothes, backpacks, and school supplies and gearing up for the new school year is also a great bonding experience for parents and children. Homeschooled children can feel left out, because there is no going back to see friends or a new class with a new teacher. That doesn't mean it can't be just as exciting! Back to school can be celebrated with just as much enthusiasm as those who go to school away from home. Here are a few great ideas that can help your children participate in this timeless tradition.

1. BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING You child may not need a new backpack or lunch box, but notebooks, pencils, folders, paper, and other supplies are essential for any child in school. Best of all, it's all on sale! Sunday morning is a great day to scour the back to school ads. Have your children help and together you can find great deals.

2. NEW CLOTHES Although these are not essential for a homeschooled child, purchasing at least one new outfit for each child can help them feel special. If the store crowds are too much for you, online shopping can be just as fun and you'll find great deals. To also help save money, check out the great money-saving coupons in the department store ads. They offer great savings and can usually be combined with sale and clearance prices.

3. CELEBRATE WITH FRIENDS Plan a get together late in the summer with other homeschooled children to help celebrate the new school year. A potluck would be a great idea, complete with back to school cupcakes. Get together at the park, or a parent's home, where the kids can play and celebrate.

4. UPDATE YOUR CLASSROOM Most homeschool families have a special place for their studies. If you do, consider updating the decor for the new school year. Dollar stores are a great place to look for teaching supplies and accessories, if you are on a strict budget. Purchasing or creating a Welcome Back banner can help uplift moods, as well.

Back to school time can be fun for kids of all ages, regardless of where they go to school. Homeschooled children are no exception. Integrating family tradition with school rituals is easy and can bring new excitement to your home classroom.
