Poetry: Poverty

Each day I wake up thankful
For I still have my bread to eat.
Am I just one of those fortunate ones
To have just what keeps me alive.

I walk a few steps down my street
Painful sights, bring tears to my eyes
Children fighting in garbage heaps
Just for a scrap of food to eat.

Yet, people have so much to throw
While poverty still knocks at peoples' door.
Poor families at railway stations, teaching
Children to beg for bread.

Many a crime are committed for hunger's sake
Stomachs crying to be fed
Bare footed, naked bodies lie in the cold
Woes of many are just not told.

Poverty raises her ugly head
Making sure to starve the under fed
Listen to your heart, just drop a coin
In a beggar's bowl to help him feed.

Don't waste the food at your table
Gather them up and feed a hungry mouth
Just a little gesture of kindness
Will help a hungry soul.
