Believe it or not, contacting skateboard companies for sponsorships can be a rather aggravating process. To be bluntly honest skateboard companies find it annoying to be contacted in reference to sponsorship. Most skateboarders don't know this when seeking sponsorship for the first time and actually lower their chances of becoming sponsored. Don't worry though, where there is a will there is a way, and there is a way.
One thing skateboarders pride themselves in, is filming. Filming is one of the most popular and best ways to obtain a sponsorship. Creating a sponsor me video is a foot in the door. A sponsor me video consist of various tricks and attributes of yourself as a skateboarder. When filming a sponsor me video, it's important to put in the effort to make the most incredible piece of footage that you possibly can. Almost all skateboard companies have an address on their website where sponsor me videos can be sent. Once your sponsor me video is finished send it off and hope for the best. Skateboard companies receive numerous sponsor me videos on a daily basis, so a reply (if any at all), will be a wait. Don't get discouraged if you don't hear back from a company. There's a motto called try again and it never hurts to go back and create an even better sponsor me video.
For some inside scoop, most pros/sponsored riders didn't contact the skateboard companies they ride for. The skateboard companies contacted them. This is a method I call, reverse contact. If you ultimately have what it takes to become a sponsored skateboarder, most likely you will be found. I'm not saying you will be found if all you do is skateboard on your neighborhood street. Seeking sponsorship takes effort on your part and getting yourself out there is essential. Enter skateboard contest, attend your local skate park (if you have one) as much as possible. Get yourself noticed as much as possible, you never know who's watching. Post videos on video upload websites, such as youtube. Wait for the prize to come to you and you never know, it just might.
The skateboarding world can be rather tricky and there's no certain way to contact skateboard companies, but when things get tricky you can always get witty. Knowledge and passion for desirable companies you wish to ride for is always helpful. Keeping annoyance under control, there is a way to annoy the pants off of companies without actually annoying them. You can do this by emailing these companies with information such as: their own product reviews, pictures, etc. They may not notice you at first, but good reviews on their products and good quality photos of you, will catch their eye eventually. Building a list of company contacts is extremely helpful, but not as easy as it's said.
Earlier I mentioned making a sponsor me video and sending it off. As well as sending one off, you can take a copy to your local skate shop. Seeking sponsorship with your local skate shop first can bring you sponsorship from various skateboard companies. Your local skate shop has superior access to these skateboard companies and can be helpful in getting you into the door.
If you have a specific company your choosing to aim for, it's important that you promote yourself to that company as much as possible. As I mentioned earlier, send photos, product reviews, etc. If they are coming to your town to host a contest or an event, be there. Amazingly google can be an aide in contacting skateboard companies, just type it in. You will be able to pull up information and even sponsorship sites such as loopd. No matter what it takes, do what it takes and get yourself sponsored!
