It was on a whim,
A whim that I will
Never have again,
It was meant to be a short run,
But it turned into something more,
I thought it was something greater
But it turned out to be only longer,
I wish I had foreseen,
The way I am right now,
If I had I would never had gone,
I would have turned back sooner,
The agony I would never have,
If only I had realized
How I would be right now,
But as it is I didn't and so I went,
To follow this idea of mine,
But as I ran it still sounded good
This wonderful idea of mine,
It didn't dawn on me until way too late
With only a few more miles to go,
That this idea of mine,
That a few miles before
I thought so glorious,
Now was the worst in the world,
I felt it in every step and stride I took,
The tightness in these legs of mine,
The shortness of my stride,
I was so close to home
With only a mile to go,
It was just around here
That I realized
How horrible this glorious idea could be,
I could hardly go on,
Every step was a pain,
I nearly collapsed on my front door,
So much for this good and glorious idea.

I cracked.
Fragile.
So says the cracked wine glass on the side of the box…
Noon some Thursdays ago,

I once read a story; a fable it was
